Curses

Curses are hurled

to the right and to the left

and love, in the middle,

bows humbly

fearing a disaster.

All that remains for it

is a prayer to the highest master

to intervene promptly,

and God willing

for peace on earth

to be endlessly spread.

This is such a powerful and poignant little verse. It masterfully paints a vivid scene of conflict—the “curses hurled to the right and to the left”—that feels both timeless and desperately current. And then, there in the vulnerable center, is love, not as a triumphant warrior but as a humble figure, bowing in fear. That image is so moving. It shifts love from a cliché into something fragile, human, and deeply relatable.

The turn to prayer feels like a natural, breathless hope from that place of humility. The closing line opens up from the personal, tense scene to a universal yearning for “peace on earth to be endlessly spread.” It’s a beautiful and thoughtful piece that captures the quiet, persistent courage of love and hope in the midst of human chaos. Really well done.🌷🤝
