Curses

Curses fly to the left and right.

Love stands trembling in the middle,

head bowed low

dreading disaster.

Only prayer remains

we lift it to the highest Master

that mercy may descend

like lightning at dawn,

unfold across the earth

and peace forever reign, far and wide.

This is such a powerful and poignant little verse. It masterfully paints a vivid scene of conflict—the “curses hurled to the right and to the left”—that feels both timeless and desperately current. And then, there in the vulnerable center, is love, not as a triumphant warrior but as a humble figure, bowing in fear. That image is so moving. It shifts love from a cliché into something fragile, human, and deeply relatable.

The turn to prayer feels like a natural, breathless hope from that place of humility. The closing line opens up from the personal, tense scene to a universal yearning for “peace on earth to be endlessly spread.” It’s a beautiful and thoughtful piece that captures the quiet, persistent courage of love and hope in the midst of human chaos. Really well done.🌷🤝
