Embracing Time

Which outdated technology do you miss the most, and why?

I miss the Walkman. My black Sony Walkman.

I remember the feeling when I finally got my favorite music list recorded on audio tape, put it into the Walkman, and, with excitement, pressed play. Then, when one side finished, I took the cassette out, turned it over, and pressed play again. It got tricky when I pressed too often, fast-forwarding and rewinding to listen to my favorite song or part of a song over and over again, and the tape got tangled up. To save it, I had to take the classic pencil and slowly and carefully untangle it and wind it up.

We had a wonderful time, and I think of the winding up of the tape as a perfect example. When things slowed down, we took the opportunity to enjoy every moment to the fullest. Rather than rushing to experience as much as possible, we embraced the slower pace and relished each experience.

One of the best things was that I could carry my Walkman with me, fastening it to my waistband while walking, biking, or traveling by car.
