Back to School

Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

I mentioned many times that I grew up in Germany. The school system is a bit different from that in Greece, where I moved to much later in life.

Back then in Germany, after earning the secondary school certificate, I attended a vocational school to gain a stronger foundation for my 3-year apprenticeship in management in wholesale and foreign trade.

Now, when I moved to Greece, things were different; at least a high school diploma was required for good job opportunities. There, of course, I lacked one, and after some struggles, I decided to return to school and earn my high school diploma.

Things were complicated at the beginning. For some school subjects, I had the foggiest notion, like Ancient Greek, so I had to learn it to translate from ancient to modern Greek. I also had Latin, another ancient language.

But surprisingly, I became a good student, a much, much better one than I had been in Germany. And one thing led to another, and since I was a good student, I decided to give it a try and take the university entrance examination. And I did, and I was accepted to the University of Athens.

The decision to go back to school completely changed my life. I stepped onto a new path, which gave me the opportunity to learn new things and grow as a human being. I became more confident and daring.
