The Philosopher with the Hammer

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?

When I started my studies at the university, after the first semester, I began to engage intensively with Philosophy, and, as my studies included German literature, specifically classic literature, I combined these two fields. What I mean is that when I read literature, I tried to find philosophical doctrines interwoven throughout the text. This, of course, demanded a different approach to literature and philosophy, and moreover to the process of reading. It’s a method of reading I adopted during my studies, and I still read literature this way nowadays.

This experience naturally influenced how I regard some philosophers. One of them is Friedrich Nietzsche. He was a genius with exceptional knowledge of Ancient Greece, specifically the Homeric and pre-Socratic eras. This expertise gave him a professorship of Classical Philology at the University of Basel at the age of 24. Moreover, he wrote scripts and books that are still the subject of endless discussion and impact our thinking today. Unfortunately, he could only deliver his knowledge to society until the age of 44. Then he had a mental breakdown and lost his mental and physical health; he had dementia and paralysis.

I always said Nietzsche was born in the wrong time and age, because his way of thinking and viewing society was too far ahead of his time.

All for that, I would like to be for a day Friedrich Nietzsche, of course, one day of his productive time. I really crave the experience of having such incredible, deep philosophical knowledge.

What a fascinating choice Vasos! Spending a day inside Nietzsche’s mind—experiencing that brilliant, groundbreaking perspective before his health declined—would indeed be incredible. Your approach to reading literature through a philosophical lens sounds like a wonderful way to keep that spirit of deep inquiry alive. Perhaps in some small way, you already channel a bit of Nietzsche when you read between the lines!
