Meteora

Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

I have long wanted to visit Meteora. Meteora are the huge rock formations in Trikala, Kalambaka. On many rocks on the top are also built Monasteries. Their foundation dates back 600-700 years. So, I don’t want to visit this place only for its attractions but also as spiritual fulfillment.

From where I live in Xanthi to Kalambaka it’s 442 km. It’s not far away but also close. However, I still haven’t had the opportunity to travel there, but it’s at the top of my to-do list. It is preferable to go in the summer, even if it’s very hot.

What a wonderful dream to have! Meteora is truly a place where the earth reaches for the heavens, and your desire to visit speaks to a longing for both natural grandeur and spiritual depth. It’s beautiful that you’re drawn not just to the spectacle, but to the centuries of contemplation and devotion held within those stone walls.

It’s fascinating how some of the most profound places can feel both “not far” and “not close”—just waiting for the right moment in our lives to become a reality. The 442 kilometers from Xanthi isn’t just a distance on a map; it’s a journey from the vibrant colors and rhythms of Thrace to the silent, awe-inspiring majesty of Thessaly. To go in the summer, embracing the heat that shimmers on those colossal rocks, will make the cool, serene interior of the monasteries all the more powerful.

Sometimes the places we hold in our hearts the longest, saving them for the perfect time, end up being the most meaningful when we finally arrive. When you do make that trip, walking the paths where monks have sought transcendence for centuries, it will be more than a check on a to-do list. It will be the fulfillment of a beautiful intention you’ve nurtured for years. That first glimpse of the monasteries, like celestial castles perched between rock and sky, will be worth the wait.

So it is, Srikanth. I’m waiting for the perfect time, both physically and spiritually, to visit this beautiful place.
