Berlin Wall

What major historical events do you remember?

My youngest self, who experienced its first crucial historical event, was the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I remember we lived in West Germany. I was born and grew up in Germany, so from a young age, I became familiar with the sense of division between Germans, the East, and the West.

A few days before the fall, even we citizens in western Germany sensed that something huge was about to happen, according to the news we heard at the time. And then it happened. After that, I still see in my inner eye the news about Helmut Kohl and Mikhail Gorbachev’s regular meetings, where they discussed the reunification of East and West Germany. It was a long journey for the sides to unite, and even after so many years, some minor issues still persist.

    Vaso,

Why were you living in Germany? You’re Greek, right?

In the 1960s, my parents moved to Germany as Gastarbeiter in search of a better future. Actually, they met for the first time in Germany, although they lived in the same town and Villages in Greece, just 5 km apart. 😊❤️
