Existential Matters

What book could you read over and over again?

That book I would need to read again and again is “Being and Time” by Martin Heidegger.

And I say need, not because it’s an easy, pleasant book. First of all, it’s a book about philosophy and especially existentialism. With this book, Heidegger influenced later philosophy and the theory of literature. It’s the most challenging book, and I have read many philosophy books.

To be honest, I still haven’t completely understood what Heidegger explains in this book; for that reason, I have to read it repeatedly, not only to finally grasp its meaning, but I’m sure that someone can read it repeatedly from a different standpoint.

Some words about Heidegger. Heidegger was and is a controversial personality, even though he notably contributed to existentialism, hermeneutics and phenomenology, part of his work had been connected to Nazism, as he became a member of the party and supported it to an extent, which till today brings him under the light of criticism. But it can’t be doubted that Heidegger had been an outstanding philosopher, only looking at who had been among his students, like Hannah Arendt, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Leo Strauss, Hans Jonas, etc.

He isn’t someone I was drawn to as a philosopher. He makes my head hurt! I am more of a pragmatist.

Yes, my head also hurt the first time I read that book. But my curiosity and persistence are too large. So, I will keep trying until I get it. 😅😊👍
