Think back on your most memorable road trip.
My most memorable trip so far was our last car trip from Germany to Greece in 1992 or 1993. Before that time, we hadn’t been to Greece for two years due to economic reasons.
However, like all Greeks who lived in Germany, we waited for the summer holidays to go to Greece. Most made that trip by car. The usual route was Germany, Austria, the Former Yugoslavia, Skopje, and Greece.
But the Yugoslavia war started late in 1991, so we had to change the route. This last time, we departed from Germany, then Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and by ship over to Greece.
The event that made this trip memorable was that our car broke down in Italy. Consequently, we had to look for a garage to have it repaired. By the way, it was a new car and its first big trip. It wasn’t easy since none of us spoke Italian or English, and I knew only some School English. Luckily, we traveled with friends who helped us.
All’s well that ends well. Even though time was pressing to catch the ship, we managed to do so and enjoyed the rest of our holiday.
Our future trips to Greece were made only by plane.
