Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.
The holiday I would like to invent is the „Holiday of History.”
Why?
Observing the young generation on social media and around me, I noticed that they have lost interest in what happened in the past and how historical events have shaped our society today. Millions of people have lost their lives in the two world wars, but not only in those; many other wars took place in different parts of the world over the centuries. Also, people like Martin Luther King, Gandhi, and Mandela fought for our rights and freedom. So, young people should learn, and we adults read again and refresh our memory of how these heroes lived and what visions they had.
Unfortunately, youngsters focus on how to dress, wear famous, expensive designer brands, acquire the latest iPhone, and just party. I don’t mean that all young people follow that lifestyle, God forbid, but it’s a remarkable part of it. Generally, there’s a wave among young people to follow a more superficial reception of things that happened in the past and around them nowadays.
For that reason, I would introduce the Holiday of History, which would be celebrated as follows:
All archeological and history museums, historical buildings, and organizations dealing with history will be open that day. And here’s the specialty for that holiday: they will open for free entry. Special tours will be held, and after the end of those, a questionnaire will take place. The best three will win prizes, like an encyclopedia, etc.
Of course, adults can also participate in and visit all events; it never hurts anyone to be reminded of history, but they will be excluded from the competition.
