A Marathon is born

What historical event fascinates you the most?

The historical event that fascinates me is the Battle of Marathon. It was the first Persian attempt to invade Greece. The two big city-states, Athens and Sparta, collaborated to protect the Hellenic ground despite their superficial enmity and crucial differences in their organization as states. According to historians, the Greeks were superior in equipment and tactics. But what makes the Battle of Marathon so unique is that, after the Greeks won at Marathon in 490 B.C., the Athenian Pheidippides decided to deliver the message „νενικήκαμεν“ that means „we are victorious (we have won)“ to the people of Athens. So, he started running from Marathon to the center of Athens; the distance between those two locations was 42. 195 meters.

Out of this battle and win was born a very important sports discipline: the Marathon Run, which still has a high reputation in the world of sports today.

Furthermore, the Athenians and Spartans have shown how two enemies can, after all, collaborate to protect their civilization and culture against an invader and higher enemy.
