If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?
We use so many words regularly to say daily, automatically, without thinking much about it. Surely, there are some words among them that shouldn’t be said. They just slip out of the mouth.
Well, which word would I cross out of my regular usage? I say the following phrase very often: „I know.” I should follow the example of Socrates, who said: „I know that I know nothing. “
We tend to be very confident about ourselves and our opinions, convinced that we know 100% to the deepest about the matters of knowledge we deal with daily. But even with matters we only have a superficial touch on, we pretend to know everything about them.
So, I would cross out the word „I know“ and be more humble regarding my knowledge, open to receiving new information, ready to learn more about life and widen my horizons.
Back to Socrates and his famous words mentioned above. Thinking more thoroughly about these, we can analyze his statement as follows: “I know nothing, and I know that I know nothing.” Examining this phrase in this context, it is as if he cancels the denial of non-knowledge.
However, I think we will never know what he really meant.
