Londinium

Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.

The furthest I’ve traveled was to England, more precisely, Cambridge and London. It was during my master’s studies in Thessaloniki, around two weeks before Eastern. After finishing my courses at university, I drove directly to the airport that day. I can’t remember the flight time, only that I arrived at Heathrow after midnight.

It was also a time when I played with the thought of moving to another country after finishing my studies. And England was one option since I had a cousin who worked and lived in Cambridge.

So, I grabbed the opportunity and visited her in Cambridge to get an idea of how it was there. My impression of Cambridge was Okay; I was not particularly excited. The building of King’s College was very impressive, and the campus, of course, but Cambridge as a city itself hasn’t much to offer to my liking.

Regarding London, who doesn’t like London? Very typical, I’ve visited Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, and the other classic tourist places. London just blew my socks off. London has an outstanding flair; I believe that is due to its multicultural assemblage. It’s the only cosmopolitan city I would love to live in. Usually, I wouldn’t say I like such big cities. Unfortunately, London is very, very, very expensive, especially the rents.

Instead of moving to London, I moved to Germany, where I grew up, but after a couple of years, during COVID-19, I moved back to Greece.

Regarding the title Londinium: Londinium is where London’s name is believed to have come from. It is the Roman name of the city that was settled in the same place as we know our lovely city today. The Roman Londinium is the first properly known settlement in this area.

I also traveled to England during my student years, and it is also the farthest destination I’ve ever traveled away from home 🙂
