How would you design the city of the future?
How would I design the city of the future? Before I start, I will orient myself to what Aristotle once said. He explained that a city exists to ensure humans’ living and good life/well-being. Rules, unwritten laws, and religious principles should arrange the relationships between the citizens. Moreover, justice and friendship should grow among the citizens. At this point, Aristotle emphasizes the meaning and sense of friendship.
After reading Aristotle’s idea of how a city should function, I think we can admit that humans failed utterly after thousands of years.
So, if I had a chance to design the city of the future from scratch, I would start with that and follow everything Aristotle said word by word.
Concentrating then on the external design of a city, I would prevent the construction of skyscrapers because, for me, these kinds of buildings represent every sense of coldness and impersonality. Instead of these buildings, I would build government buildings in a neoclassical style with a futuristic touch since we are referring to the future and domestic residences in a modern style based on the ecological aspect.
Unmissable in my designed city is the creation of parks so that people can enjoy their days after work and on weekends, and children play freely. Also, I would install public exercise equipment for the people who canโt afford to pay for a fitness center. Predominately, the streets will be bike roads to expel the cars from the city. People in my town wonโt need a car, because there will be a lot of small supermarkets and small shops where they can shop daily and another reason a car would be unnecessary is the public transport network will be very efficient.
Thatโs my dream for my future city, built and combined with the principles of Aristotle and the ecological modernity of the 21st century.
