Commute

Think back on your most memorable road trip.

Oh, I’ve made many road trips, especially while I was studying in Thessaloniki, because I had to commute by bus from Xanthi. Xanthi-Thessaloniki is ca. 220 km, and by bus it takes around 2 ½ hours. I made these trips twice a week.

There was a time during these 3 years when the farmers made protests and blocked the highway at intervals. This meant that in the morning, heading to Thessaloniki, you mightn’t have met any problems, but on the return, there was a blockage.

This happened to me, exactly on the day I had to go to university. In the morning, I arrived peacefully, without any troubles, at Thessaloniki. In the late afternoon, when I started from Thessaloniki, we got informed that we had to make a detour as the farmers had blocked the highway. The consequence was that instead of arriving at 21:30 at Xanthi, it was almost midnight. Was I utterly vexed? No, I understood their demands; they did to the government. I believe being a farmer is one of the most difficult and meaningful jobs. I wasn’t angry about the delay, but I was completely tired when I arrived home, having been on the road since 6 am.
