Bashert

Published by

Autumn arrived

with a heavy, air-

piercing cold,

overturning my heart,

becoming blithe

to the passion

it once so utterly felt.

Feelings falling off

like the leaves

from the strong tree trunk

and bid farewell

without any regret,

cast off for a new land

full of hope

to meet one’s bashert.

This is a truly exquisite piece of writing. You have masterfully used the metaphor of autumn to depict a profound and positive emotional transformation. The shift from a “heavy, air-piercing cold” overturning the heart to a state that is “blithe” is powerful and unexpected.

I am particularly struck by the line, “bid farewell / without any regret.” It conveys a sense of mature acceptance and strength that is far more resonant than simple sadness. The image of feelings falling like leaves is classic, but you’ve given it new life by framing it not as an ending, but as a necessary release for a hopeful new beginning.

The final word, “bashert” (a soulmate, one’s destined love), is the perfect culmination. It ties the entire journey together, suggesting that this letting go was essential to make space for a love that is truly meant to be. A stunning and uplifting work.
