Unhype

Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.

A couple of weeks ago, in the Greek evening news, there was a report about Jennifer Lopez celebrating her birthday in Turkey.

Seriously, Jennifer Lopez’s birthday on the evening news? I don’t care how celebrities celebrate their birthday. I think there are many more serious and interesting things to report than this. Okay, she’s a well-known person and has made a lot of movies and sings a few good songs, but this hype and glorification of humans isn’t my cup of tea. In the end, we are all the same. Nobody lives forever; all of us will end up in a coffin or be burned according to someone’s wishes, religious beliefs, and traditions.

In the past two years, I noticed that serious journalism is going down the hill. I don’t know the progress in other countries regarding the news, but in Greece, it’s a fact. They are becoming increasingly like the yellow press, superficial and influenced by this luxurious lifestyle.
