My hope to see you here this week was in vain; yet I hope it was thwarted only by your eagerness to work. But neither hearing from you nor seeing you is something I can hardly get used to anymore. I am very eager to hear about your current occupation. I have been told that you would have the third volume of Meister printed by Johannis Print. That would be faster than I thought, but as much as I am pleased for Meister, I would be sorry that you would be taken away from the Horen for such a long time. […]

Despite a lively longing to see and speak with you again, I could not leave the place this week. Some actors whom I wanted to judge in guest roles, the bad weather, and a rheumatism that I had contracted through a cold, have gradually hindered me, and I still do not see when and how I will be able to leave.
Let me say, however, that I have been diligent, that the largest part of the fourth book has been completed, and that the Procurator has also been worked through. I hope the style in which I have conceived and executed the story will not displease you. […]
