Printing Revolution

The most important invention in your lifetime is…

Well, I think the smartphone is the most significant invention in my lifetime. Looking more closely at the technological evolution of smartphones, we have to admit that they have actually developed into miniature computers. Nowadays, you can almost do everything with a smartphone: make calls, send emails, browse the internet, write texts, listen to music, make videos, and take photos. It’s an all-around gadget.

Aside from the epoch I live in and their inventions, for me, the most important invention, as a book lover, is the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 in Germany. This revolution led to significant changes in society and the distribution of information and knowledge. Especially regarding knowledge, since it was a privilege for the monks and the clericals. More people started to learn reading so they could read the available quantities of books. This led to a revolutionary conscious awakening and speaking against clerical and aristocratic supremacy.

You must be very old to be alive in 1440!

I heard someone saying that the printing press was responsible for many big problems like wars and revolutions.

I don’t agree, but the printing press combined with freedom of speech, was very important for developing civilisation, democracy and the democratic process.

Like most inventions -can be used for good or bad purposes.

I’ve mentioned in my prompt, “aside from the epoch I live,” which means generally speaking about inventions. 😉

I very much agree about the importance of the printing press. I think the most important invention if my lifetime will turn out to be A.I. because it will allow humanity to retire and take it easy. Whether we are living our best lives or turning into lumps watching screens all day, whether we’re living in a paradise or underground hiding from ecological devastation, is the open question. I also think social media is an intellectual dead end, but here I am, posting away.
