The Surreal World of Márquez

What book are you reading right now?

The book I’m reading now is „One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez.

How did I come to that book?

I accidentally bumped into a new series trailer on YouTube. It aroused my interest, so I searched for more information and found that the series is an adaptation of a book.

As I said, I was very attracted by the trailer, so I decided to buy and read the book before the series starts on Netflix in December.

When I started reading the book, I had some difficulties getting into the story and going with the flow, but after 30-40 pages, I was captivated.

Márquez describes a surreal world where magic, Gypsies, death, traditions, family relations, politics, and war entangle and do not influence only the Buendía family itself but also the villagers of Macondo.

Márquez presents how a village far from the advanced civilization and vibrant society develops from its traditional roots into modernity.

There is a funny situation in the early part of the book when modernization slowly starts to enter Macondo. One of the founders and fathers of the village of Macondo, José Arcadio, starts losing his marbles.

I won’t say anything more; I don’t want to spoil the book for those who may want to read it, but I will upload the trailer.

I only want to mention that after reading the book, I came to the conclusion that adapting it for the screen is very difficult. So, I’m very, very curious about what job the director did with this series.
