Who is your favorite historical figure?
My favorite historical figure is the philospher Aristotle.
He was a polymath and dealt with different epistemological and scientific issues. He applied his methods to natural sciences, philosophy, linguistics, economics, politics, psychology, and even the arts and brought structure to these areas. All this thanks to his critical nature of thinking
Fascinating is his logic and the theory of syllogism, which had a huge impact on Western history, as well as his deductive and inductive reasoning.
An example for a deductive syllogism is:
Socrates is a man.
All men are mortal.
Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
And here is an example for an idnuctive syllogism:
Most Greeks eat olives.
Socrates is a Greek.
Therefore, Socrates eats olives.
His writings, Nicomachean Ethics and Politics, are also very enlightening. In Nicomachean Ethics, he analyzes ethics and virtue, their role in our daily lives, and how they can be learned and applied. In Politics, he describes how the best form of society should be the authority of justice and the political system and who should exert the political power.
Now, considering that he critically involved himself in all these matters in 367 BC and his theories are still very relevant today, especially for students at the University, I think he left a vast, impressive heritage of knowledge.
