Take a Dare

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

Actually, what I would ban is not a word but a phrase.

Many years ago, my boss told me during my apprenticeship:

There is no I can’t, but I don’t want.

I found it a bit harsh at that age, but the years and life experience have shown me that he was right. Even if you know the possibilities of achieving your goals are very low, you should take risks and try them. I’m sure you will be surprised about the result many times.

Furthermore, nothing is worse when, sometime later in life, you regret not taking advantage of the slightest opportunity you once had. And in case you fail “C’ est la vie,” at least you know that you have tried.

So, I would permanently ban the phrase “I can’t” because where there is a will there is always a way.

“Power is given only to him who dares to stoop and take it … one must have the courage to dare.”

~Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment~
